Saxen Drift Mine

The 5,142 hectare Saxendrift Mine property is located on the south bank of the Middle Orange River and adjacent to the Wouterspan property.

Four kilometres from the Saxendrift processing plant is the 616 hectare Saxendrift Extension property (acquired in 2012); through its integration into the Saxendrift mine plan, it has extended the mine life of Saxendrift’s processing infrastructure to seven years.

The property consists of a number of different terrace levels (Terraces A to D). Each terrace has its own distinctive characteristics which have been defined by the varying influence of the Vaal River and the upper Orange River.

The gravels of the Upper Terraces (Terraces A and B) are comprised of a boulder-gravel, overlain by an upward-fining alluvial sequence of upper gravels and sand lenses. The gravels of the Lower terraces (Terraces C and D) of the Middle Orange River are typified by up to 30% sand matrix with a high proportion of zeolite-rich sand lenses and a high proportion of red Drakensberg basalt clasts.
