  • Key Performance Areas: Plan and coordinate research with single or multi-disciplinary team, including multidisciplinary approach to breed new stone fruit cultivars: plum and apricot. Conducts independent and advanced research. Management and enhancement of genebank. Design of crossing programme to meet breeding objectives. Screening, evaluation and selection of seedlings of new apricot and plum crosses. Manage data capturing, analysis, interpretation & recommendations. Development and application of molecular markers especially as a selection tool. Progress reporting to ARC and industry (written and lecture format). Publish peer reviewed scientific and semi-scientific papers. Disseminate research results by presenting oral or poster contributions. Interacting with researchers in similar fields of study in South Africa and internationally. Technology transfer: participates in the marketing and disseminating of information. Source new national/international research opportunities and write proposals. Responsible for compiling and managing project budget. Personnel management and liaison with service departments. Actively seeks networking opportunities (e.g. attends scientific gatherings, works with farmer communities etc.) and liaise with funders, clients and research partners. Stand as a Researcher at a national level, and supervise or co-supervise PhD and MSc students with emphasise on critical and scares skills. Provide leadership and mentoring of Researchers, Technicians, Students and Research Assistants. Identify and participate in own learning opportunity. Assist in identifying new business opportunities Requirements: The candidate must have 5 years relevant experience, post Ph.D. in conventional plant breeding and Plant Genetics and/or Plant Genomics. In addition, training or experience in Pomology (horticulture of deciduous fruits) is desirable. Good knowledge, understanding and background in modern and conventional plant breeding techniques. Proven fund raising record. Management skills, strong problem solving and leadership skills. Be able to do strategic planning and manage research projects. Be able to work for long periods in both a laboratory and in orchards. Be willing at busy seasons to work beyond regular working hours. Be willing, on occasions, to spend nights away from home. Have well developed oral and written communication skills. Agricultural Research knowledge and skills. Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Office as well as data analysis tools pertinent for plant breeding. Ability to render technical and other services at national level. Knowledge of intellectual property opportunities and management. Meet peer norm requirements for specific field of expertise, by authorship or contribution to publications. Must be in possession of a valid driver’s license: Code B or EB.
