    Job Description
    Fire Safety Engineering Consultant
    Academic qualifications
    The person shall be a fire safety engineering consultant of suitable qualification and experience to the satisfaction of all Director(s), preferably as with appropriate academic qualification(s) and Registered at ECSA such as:
    Mechanical Engineering Degree by a credible university;
    B Tech degree
    Professional experience
    Experience at the appropriate level should include:
    Sprinkler design
    Detection design
    Gas suppression design
    Fire protection plans
    Rational Fire Design
    At least 4 years consulting engineers experience in a consulting engineering practice
    Job functions
    The fire safety engineering consultant will be responsible for the following:
    System selection through Value Engineering.
    Budget Cost / Estimating.
    Preparation of concept and development reports.
    Preparation of Rational Fire Design in terms of Regulation T1(2)(a) of the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act (Act 103 of 1977).
    Submission and approval of such design by the relevant authorities.
    Detail design and engineering.
    System coordination with other services and fitting into building.
    Preparing sketch drawings for the Drawing Office, supervision and checking of production of tender drawings and signing of same.
    Preparation of specifications for contract documents.
    Preparation and adjudication of pre-qualification documents.
    Calling, evaluating and adjudication of tender. Preparing adjudication report.
    Preparation of Operations and Maintenance Manuals if contractor defaults.
    Advising Client on staffing requirements.
    Supervision of contractor
    Supervising a Contractor’s performance is in accordance with the agreed programme and report any deviation in writing.
    Inspect quality of completed work on site and report in writing in terms of compliance with contract document or any deviations.
    Valuation of completed work on site and comparison with contractors claim / submitted cash flow and report any deviations in writing.
    Contract administration on projects
    Writing of letters and reports to Clients, Architects, other members of the professional team and authorities, to confirm instructions, design criteria, coordination and approval.
    Implementing of the necessary internal and external communication forms.
    Implementing of standardised and comprehensible systems for filing of correspondence, forms, minutes of meetings, certificates, etc. to ensure that communication with all involved parties - internal and external - is maintained, formalised, recorded and coordinated.
    Ensuring that all Client cost reporting is in accordance with the agreed systems which are executed on a monthly basis.
    Ensuring the fee accounts are sent in accordance with defined duties, work executed internally and cost valuation of work completed by the Subcontractors.
    Monthly recording, monitoring, processing and reporting on all extra work, abandoned work, request for additional work and instructions.
    Prepare monthly performance, quality and financial status reports
    Attend all management, site and coordination meetings, etc.
    Write or initiate the necessary reports, minutes, letters timeously.
    Process the monthly claims and issue payment certificates at / on the agreed date / time to the professional team.
    Process / issue the necessary approved variation orders and update the cost report on a monthly basis and then update the necessary contract documentation to reflect the variation.
    Witness the necessary commissioning tests and initiate them should the Contractor default.
    Check all equipment submissions, programmes and shop drawings for conformance with the contract document and process them in accordance with the S & P system.
    Check / validate inspection reports, commissioning results, Operating and Maintenance manuals received from the Contractor.
    Arrange and check the “As Built” drawings and plant room instructions submitted by the Contractor so that they reflect the installation / operation of the installed plant.
    Prepare / advise the Client on future maintenance, preparation of documents, calling tenders, adjudication and implementation/administration thereof.
    Internal management (planning, controlling, scheduling and feedback)
    Adhere to internal cost / time / administration procedures.
    Provide feedback on shortcomings in design / documentation which effect the construction phase negatively.
    Plan workload on a weekly basis and coordinate work required by others in accordance with the prevailing system.
    Adhere to the internal filing / cataloguing and general administration systems.
    Plan leave with fellow staff and ensure continuity of work by proper handing over for stand-in person.
    Monitor project progress against internal and external agreed budgets and programmes.
    Audit and reporting
    Conducting fire safety and fire risk assessment audits in terms of relevant legislation and in accordance with internationally accepted fire engineering principles;
    Producing reports in order to clearly explain findings of surveys, recommended actions and other requirements in terms of the Client’s brief.
