    Job Description
    An international firm of consulting engineers is looking for a Transport Planning Business Unit Leader to ensure that the business unit is the market leader and a centre of excellence.
    The successful candidate will use his/her technical and operational knowledge and expertise to effectively manage and grow one of the largest transport planning departments in Southern Africa and be the senior “face” of the Transport Planning Division.
    Minimum Requirements:
    • Experienced Civil Engineer with a Masters or equivalent post graduate qualification in transport planning
    • A financially astute individual with experience in P&L accountability relating to both projects and the Business Unit itself
    • 10 years management experience in a technical/engineering environment, preferably in a consulting firm
    • One who is regarded as a market leader and is well respected in this field, thus being able to make an immediate impact internally and externally
    • A strong leader who is able to manage, motivate and guide a team
    • In individual who is both hands on when circumstances dictate and an effective delegator who directs and manages teams and projects
    • Ability to constantly grow and develop the business unit by ensuring the correct strategic direction
    • The ability to be internally and externally focused to see and create opportunities, as it relates to business development
    • A good communicator that can clearly articulate his/her views and ideas to all stakeholders
    • The ability to interact with the skills available throughout Arup, with external consultants and able to provide clients with the best possible solution
    • To have the ability to ask for help when the need arises
    • A leader with the ability to develop the Arup Transport Planning Business Unit from an operational and a technical point of view
    • The Transport Planning Business Unit Leader will be a reputable individual, be well respected and will make an immediate impact
    • A trustworthy, presentable and charismatic individual who can develop an excellent rapport with internal and external stakeholders
    • A highly motivated and energetic individual with a high work ethic and goes the extra mile
    • An individual with a thorough understanding of economics, property and transport and the impact a project will have from an infrastructural and operational point of view
    • An articulate, dynamic and well-connected individual who is a visionary and can secure leads for the Planning Team
    • A self-managed individual with a strong desire to seek new opportunities, as well as leverage these opportunities across other Business Units
    • An individual who will drive growth by using a business develop strategy
    • The ability to demonstrate technical capability and innovativeness to clients
    • A hands on individual who can sustain the Planning Team by demonstrating a hands-on approach when needed, as well as delegate effectively.
    Your role will include:
    The Transport Planning Lead, reporting into the Planning Lead for Southern Africa will be responsible to grow and develop the Transport Planning Business into a sustainable and operationally efficient business
    • A focus on people management to ensure that staff have the required technical competence and undergo continuous training and development
    • Play an integral part in collaborating with, and reacting to other businesses within Consulting and other Practices, in winning and delivering work
    • To ensure financial success of the Transport Planning team through attraction and retention of commercially viable projects
    • Be an active participate in the Bid Committee for co-ordination and preparation of tenders
    • To be the face of Transport Planning Team when liaising with external clients and ensure their satisfaction
    • To develop a business plan for the Transport Planning Team that will support Arup globally
    • Be a mentor and guide to the project team
